THE ELECTIONS AMENDMENT ACT

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Elections Act is amended by this Act.

Clause 49(1)(c) is replaced with the following:

(c) sets as election day a Tuesday

(i) that is 28 days after the date the writ is issued, in the case of a fixed date election, or

(ii) that is at least 28 days but no more than 34 days after the writ is issued, in the case of any other election.

Subsection 62(3) is amended by striking out "35 days" and substituting "28 days".

Clause 170(3)(b) is amended by striking out "35 days" and substituting "28 days".

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Elections Act to establish a standard 28-day election period for a fixed date general election. The election period for a by-election or a general election that is not held on a fixed date is shortened to between 28 days and 34 days.
