THE ISLAMIC HERITAGE MONTH ACT (COMMEMORATION OF DAYS, WEEKS AND MONTHS ACT AMENDED)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

C.C.S.M. c. C150.5 amended

1   The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended by this Act.

2   The following is added after Schedule 32:

SCHEDULE 32.1

ISLAMIC HERITAGE MONTH

WHEREAS the contributions of the Muslim community in Canada were first recognized in 2007 when October was designated as Canadian Islamic History Month by the House of Commons;

AND WHEREAS Manitoba was the first province to officially designate Islamic History Month in 2013;

AND WHEREAS the number of Muslims who call Manitoba home is rapidly increasing every year;

AND WHEREAS members of Manitoba's Muslim community have made significant social, economic and political contributions to the province and those contributions should be celebrated;

AND WHEREAS combatting all forms of prejudice, discrimination and Islamophobia requires education and awareness;

AND WHEREAS Islamic Heritage Month will provide all Manitobans the opportunity to reflect on the rich heritage of Muslims in our province and celebrate our province's ethnic diversity and multiculturalism;

THEREFORE the following is proclaimed throughout Manitoba:

Islamic Heritage Month

1   In each year, the month of October is to be known as Islamic Heritage Month.

Coming into force

3   This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended to proclaim October of each year as Islamic Heritage Month.
