THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AMENDMENT ACT (NUTRITION PROGRAMS)

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Public Schools Act is amended by this Act.

2(1)

The following is added after subsection 47.2(3):

Annual report on nutrition programs

47.2(3.1)

Not later than October 31 in each year, the minister must prepare a report that sets out for each school division and school district for the immediately preceding fiscal year

(a) the name of every school within the division or district that provided a nutrition program;

(b) the type of nutrition program provided at each school; and

(c) the number of pupils at each school who participated in the nutrition program.

Information from school boards

47.2(3.2)

A school board must provide to the minister the information set out in subsection (3.1) within the time and in the form specified by the minister.

Tabling report

47.2(3.3)

The minister must table a copy of the report under subsection (3.1) on any of the first 15 days on which the Assembly is sitting after the report is completed.

Publication of report

47.2(3.4)

The minister must make the report publicly available on a government website as soon as practicable after tabling the report in the Assembly.

Subsection 47.2(4) is amended by adding the following definition:

"nutrition program" means a meal or snack program provided by a school to its pupils at no charge. (« programme d'alimentation »)

The following is added after clause 48(1)(h):

(h.1) provide, without charge, nutrition programs to pupils;

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Public Schools Act to require the minister to report each year by school division and school district on the schools that provided a nutrition program during the previous fiscal year. The minister must table the report in the Assembly and make it available to the public.
