HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Animal Care Act is amended by this Act.

The following is added after section 5.3 and before the heading for Part 3:

Elective declawing of cats prohibited

A veterinarian must not perform a partial digital amputation (commonly known as declawing or onychectomy) on a cat unless they are of the opinion that there exists a veterinary medical reason to perform the procedure.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Animal Care Act to prohibit a veterinarian from declawing a cat unless, in their opinion, there is a veterinary medical reason to do so.
