THE REMEMBRANCE DAY AWARENESS ACT AND AMENDMENTS TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ACT

WHEREAS the freedoms and dignity enjoyed by Manitobans are preserved by those who serve in Canada's armed forces;

AND WHEREAS those who serve and have served, and the sacrifices they have made, must not be forgotten;

AND WHEREAS Remembrance Day provides the opportunity to remember and pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives, limbs and health to protect our freedoms;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

Remembrance Day Awareness Week

In each year, the seven-day period from November 5 to November 11 is to be known throughout Manitoba as Remembrance Day Awareness Week.

2(1)

The Public Schools Act is amended by this section.

2(2)

The following is added after section 85 and before the centred heading "ACCIDENTS":

Remembrance Day exercise

85.1(1)

Each school must hold a Remembrance Day exercise on the last school day before November 11 each year.

Form of exercise

85.1(2)

The form of the exercise must be approved by the principal.

2(3)

The following is added after clause 60(5)(c):

(c.1) the private school complies with section 85.1 (Remembrance Day exercise) as if it were a public school;

This Act may be cited as The Remembrance Day Awareness Act and referred to as chapter R81 of the Continuing Consolidation of the Statutes of Manitoba.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill proclaims November 5 to 11 in each year as Remembrance Day Awareness Week. By amendment to The Public Schools Act, it also requires schools to hold Remembrance Day exercises on the last school day before Remembrance Day.
