It has been in effect since November 14, 1990, when this Act came into force.

WHEREAS there existed in St. Boniface, Manitoba, a community of religious men of The Society of Jesus, founded by Ignatius of Loyola, whose objects were the establishment and carrying on of missions or parishes, schools, colleges and seminaries, and which engaged in agricultural farming in Manitoba as one of the means of supporting the above missions or parishes, schools, colleges and seminaries;
AND WHEREAS a petition was presented by the Reverend Alexander Gagnieur, S.J., of the said Society of Jesus, and others, praying that the members of the said society from time to time engaged in the carrying out of the said objects in the Province of Manitoba be incorporated;
AND WHEREAS their prayer was granted, and resulted in the enactment of An Act to incorporate "The Society of Jesus", assented to March 10, 1915;
AND WHEREAS the first members of the said corporation were the following persons: The Reverend Alexander Gagnieur, S.J.; the Reverend Joseph Blain, S.J.; the Reverend Albinus Primeau, S.J.; the Reverend Edward O'Gara, S.J.; and the Reverend Francois X. Robichaud, S.J., all of the City of St. Boniface, in the Province of Manitoba;
AND WHEREAS the Minister of Justice has caused the Act to be prepared in English and French for re-eanctment in accordance with a judgment dated June 13, 1985 and an order dated November 4, 1985 of the Supreme Court of Canada;
ATTENDU QU'il existe à Saint-Boniface, au Manitoba, une communauté d'hommes religieux de la Société de Jésus fondée par Ignace de Loyola et ayant pour objets l'établissement et l'administration de missions ou de paroisses, d'écoles, de collèges et de séminaires ainsi que la poursuite d'activités agricoles au Manitoba pour le soutien de ces missions, paroisses, écoles, collèges et séminaires;
ATTENDU QUE le Révérend Alexander Gagnieur, S.J., et d'autres personnes ont demandé la constitution en corporation des membres de la Société;
ATTENDU QUE leur demande a été reçue et qu'il en a résulté l'adoption de la loi intitulée « An Act to incorporate "The Society of Jesus" » sanctionnée le 10 mars 1915;
ATTENDU QUE les membres fondateurs de la Corporation étaient les Révérends Alexander Gagnieur, S.J., Joseph Blain, S.J., Albinus Primeau, S.J., Edward O'Gara, S.J., et François X. Robichaud, S.J., tous de Saint-Boniface, au Manitoba;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

Continuation
1 The Society of Jesus (hereinafter referred to as "the corporation") is continued as a corporation, consisting of those persons who were members on the coming into force of this Act and such other persons, being members of the said order and residents of Manitoba, as become members of the corporation.
Prorogation
1 La Société de Jésus (ci-après appelée la « Corporation ») est prorogée à titre de corporation composée des personnes qui en sont membres.
Objects
2 The objects of the corporation are
(a) to establish and maintain schools, colleges, observatories, seminaries and similar institutions;
(b) to engage in and encourage investigation in languages, history, philosophy, mathematics, sciences and all other branches of learning;
(c) to establish and maintain parishes and missions, and to carry on or aid in such works as are customary for the religious, moral and social advancement of the people of the Province;
(d) to carry on agricultural farming as a means of supporting in part the varied undertakings set out in clauses (a), (b) and (c).

2 La Corporation a pour objets :

Head office
3 The head office of the corporation will be at St. Boniface or at such other place in Manitoba as may from time to time be determined by the corporation.

Members
4 The members of the corporation shall be members of the Society of Jesus, founded by Ignatius of Loyola, and any member of the corporation who ceases to be a member of the said society loses membership in the corporation.

Council
5 The affairs of the corporation shall be managed by a Council composed of the provincial of the order of the Society of Jesus for the Province of Canada and his consultors, chosen according to the constitution of the order; and the council shall have power to make rules and regulations not contrary to law or to the statutes of the society for the management of the affairs of the corporation.

5 Le provincial et ses conseillers, choisis en conformité avec la constitution de l'ordre, forment le conseil de la province du Canada et administrent les affaires de la Corporation. Powers as to real property
6 The corporation shall have power from time to time and at all times hereafter to acquire by gift, devise, purchase, lease or otherwise for its benefit any real property, and to dispose of same by sale, mortgage, lease, exchange or otherwise, and with the proceeds thereof acquire other real property or invest the same in any other property or security whatsoever for the use and benefit of the corporation. Provided, however, that the annual value of the real estate held by or in trust for the corporation, excepting such property as is necessary for the actual carrying on of the work of the corporation, shall not exceed $25,000.

Investment of money
7 The corporation shall have power from time to time to invest any of its money upon mortgage security of real estate and in debentures of municipal or school corporations, provincial or federal stocks or bonds, or of Great Britain and Ireland, or of any foreign state, or other securities whatsoever; and for the purposes of such investments may take mortgages or other assignments thereof, and may sell, assign, transfer and discharge such mortgages, either in whole or in part, and, if a loan is wanted, the council of the corporation may obtain such loan or advance of such money, and borrow in the name of the corporation by way of promissory notes, mortgages or otherwise, as the council may determine.

Power to sell lands etc.
8 It shall be lawful for the corporation, and it is hereby empowered to sell, exchange, mortgage, hypothecate or otherwise dispose of or pledge any lands, tenements or hereditaments, or other real or personal property, stocks, shares, bonds, debentures or securities of which it may at any time be seized, possessed or in any wise interested in, by virtue of this Act, or however otherwise, and make and execute, under its common seal, or otherwise according to law, all proper deeds and instruments, and do all other acts, matters and things requisite or necessary to effectuate all and singular the premises, and the corporation shall stand seized and possessed of the real and personal property, securities or money resulting from any transaction taking place under this section to and for the uses and purposes of the Society of Jesus.

Accounting
9 The corporation shall, whenever required so to do by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, make a report in writing of its affairs and property.
