The Drug-Related Death Bereavement Day Act

Explanatory Note

This note is a reader's aid and is not part of the law.

This Act proclaims the first Sunday in May of every year as Drug-Related Death Bereavement Day, a day to reflect on the impact of drugs in Manitoba and to grieve those lost to drugs.

(Assented to June 1, 2022)

WHEREAS Manitoba is grappling with a drug addiction crisis that has devastating impacts on individuals, families and communities;

AND WHEREAS Manitoba has seen an increase in the annual number of drug-related deaths over several years and this number has risen sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic;

AND WHEREAS behind every number is a person — a child, a parent, a family member, a friend;

AND WHEREAS a day of recognition for those who have died as a result of drugs will provide an opportunity for Manitobans to collectively reflect on the drug crisis, to challenge the stigma around drug use, and to grieve;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

Drug-Related Death Bereavement Day

In each year, the first Sunday in May is to be known throughout Manitoba as Drug-Related Death Bereavement Day.

This Act may be referred to as chapter D106 of the Continuing Consolidation of the Statutes of Manitoba.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.
