THE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AMENDMENT ACT (INCREASED PENALTIES FOR PASSING SCHOOL BUSES)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:
C.C.S.M. c. H60 amended
1 The Highway Traffic Act is amended by this Act.
2 The following is added after subsection 137(2):
Penalties for passing school bus
137(2.1) A person who contravenes subsection (2) is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction,
(a) for a first offence, to a fine of not more than $2,500;
(b) for a second offence, to a fine of not more than $5,000; and
(c) for a third or subsequent offence, to a fine of not more than $7,500.
Coming into force
3 This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note The Highway Traffic Act is amended to create higher fines when a person is convicted multiple times of passing a school bus that is stopped so that students can enter or exit the bus. |
