HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:
C.C.S.M. c. C150.5 amended
1 The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended by this Act.
2 The following is added as Schedule 15.0.2.1:
SCHEDULE 15.0.2.1
LYME AND OTHER TICK-BORNE DISEASES AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are the result of an infection by disease-causing agents such as viruses, parasites and bacteria that can be contracted through the bite of an infected tick that is most commonly known in Manitoba as the deer tick or blacklegged tick;
AND WHEREAS the risk period for contracting anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme Disease and Powassan virus, the four tick-borne diseases found in Manitoba, is during April to November when ticks are most active;
AND WHEREAS reported cases of tick-borne diseases have significantly increased in Manitoba and treatment is most successful in the early stages of infection;
AND WHEREAS greater awareness of the cause and symptoms of tick-borne diseases will help Manitobans take precautions to minimize their risk of infection and severe illness;
AND WHEREAS observing Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Diseases Awareness Month in May will serve to promote awareness and education about these serious diseases and their symptoms;
THEREFORE the following is proclaimed throughout Manitoba:
Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Diseases Awareness Month
1 In each year, the month of May is to be known as Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Diseases Awareness Month.
Coming into force
3 This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.
Explanatory Note The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended to proclaim the month of May of each year as Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Diseases Awareness Month. |
