HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:
C.C.S.M. c. C150.5 amended
1 The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended by this Act.
2 The following is added as Schedule 15.0.3:
SCHEDULE 15.0.3
VICTIMS OF IMPAIRED DRIVERS COMMEMORATION DAY
WHEREAS driving while impaired by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs continues to occur at an alarming rate in Manitoba, often resulting in the death or serious injury of innocent victims;
AND WHEREAS the legal, financial, physical and emotional consequences of impaired driving impact not only those who are in collisions, but also their families, friends and communities;
AND WHEREAS impaired driving and its consequences are completely preventable and it is in the public interest to do more to end these senseless tragedies;
AND WHEREAS it is important that Manitobans, especially new drivers, are regularly reminded of the dangers and consequences of impaired driving;
AND WHEREAS the legalization of cannabis has resulted in a greater need to dispel misconceptions and increase public awareness about how cannabis can negatively affect driving;
AND WHEREAS setting aside one day each year to remember and honour the victims of impaired drivers will give Manitobans an opportunity to learn about the dangers and consequences of impaired driving and to reflect on the role that each of us can play in keeping our roads safe;
THEREFORE the following is proclaimed throughout Manitoba:
Victims of Impaired Drivers Commemoration Day
1 In each year, May 1 is to be known as Victims of Impaired Drivers Commemoration Day.
Coming into force
3 This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.
Explanatory Note The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended to proclaim May 1 of each year as Victims of Impaired Drivers Commemoration Day. |
