THE CELEBRATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY ACT (COMMEMORATION OF DAYS, WEEKS AND MONTHS ACT AMENDED)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

C.C.S.M. c. C150.5 amended

1   The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended by this Act.

2   The following is added after Schedule 19.1:

SCHEDULE 19.2
CELEBRATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY

WHEREAS Filipinos have maintained strong communities in Manitoba for generations, starting with the arrival of expertly trained physicians and nurses in the 1950s and continuing with the migration of many Filipinos a decade later to work in Manitoba's thriving clothing manufacturing industry;

AND WHEREAS Filipinos have continued to play a crucial role in all sectors in the province, including as health care experts, knowledgeable academics, accomplished artists and innovative entrepreneurs;

AND WHEREAS The Filipino Heritage Month Act was enacted in 2022 to recognize the Filipino communities' deep roots throughout Manitoba and their tremendous contribution to the growth, prosperity and development of this province;

AND WHEREAS Filipino communities around the world celebrate June 12 to commemorate the declaration of Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898, and the ongoing strength of their home country;

AND WHEREAS Filipino Manitobans also celebrate June 12 to recognize the harms and violence caused by colonialism, celebrations which build solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of Canada, who have similarly experienced the effects of colonization;

AND WHEREAS proclaiming a Celebration of Philippine Independence Day gives all Manitobans an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and appreciate the vibrant Filipino culture and heritage in the province;

THEREFORE the following is proclaimed throughout Manitoba:

Celebration of Philippine Independence Day

1   In each year, June 12 is to be known as Celebration of Philippine Independence Day.

Coming into force

3   This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

The Commemoration of Days, Weeks and Months Act is amended to proclaim June 12 of each year as Celebration of Philippine Independence Day.
