THE FATALITY INQUIRIES AMENDMENT ACT (OVERDOSE DEATH REPORTING)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

1   The Fatality Inquiries Act is amended by this Act.

2   The following is added after section 43.1:

Reporting drug overdose deaths

43.2(1)   The chief medical examiner must prepare a statistical report for each month that sets out

(a) the number of deaths that occurred in the province during the month for which an overdose of a drug is a primary or contributing cause of death; and

(b) the type of drug, either alone or in combination with another drug, that is suspected of causing or contributing to each death reported under clause (a).

Report to be made public

43.2(2)   The chief medical examiner must make the report available to the public by posting it on a government website not later than three months after the end of the month.

Coming into force

3   This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note  

This Bill amends The Fatality Inquiries Act to require the chief medical examiner to post a report on a government website setting out the number of drug overdose deaths in Manitoba for each month. The report must also identify the type of drug that is suspected of causing or contributing to each reported death.
