THE DRIVERS AND VEHICLES AMENDMENT ACT (LICENCE PLATES FOR MMIWG2S AWARENESS)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:
The Drivers and Vehicles Act is amended by this Act.
Subsection 60(1) is amended by striking out "section 60.1" and substituting "sections 60.1 and 60.3".
The following is added as section 60.3:
In this section, the abbreviation "MMIWG2S" means missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.
Upon receipt of an organization's application that is acceptable to the registrar, the registrar shall make available a specialty number plate that
(a) includes"MMIWG2S" in capital letters;
(b) depicts a red hand or a red dress; and
(c) includes any other depiction or design as may be determined by the registrar.
After consulting with individuals and organizations that represent the interests of the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, the minister may direct that all or a portion of the charges collected for the specialty plates described in subsection (2) are to be paid by the administrator to a registered charity that benefits those families.
This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.
