THE FARMERS' MARKETS WEEK ACT

WHEREAS farmers play a critical role in Manitoba's history and economy;

AND WHEREAS farmers' markets provide an opportunity for consumers to meet farmers and purchase farm products directly from them;

AND WHEREAS farmers' markets give consumers the opportunity to purchase farm products that have been produced in an ethical and environmentally sustainable manner;

AND WHEREAS marketing farm products through farmers' markets enables locally produced products to be consumed locally, which benefits the environment by minimizing the distance that products are transported;

AND WHEREAS Farmers' Markets Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the role that farmers' markets play in supporting local farms, raising awareness about farming in Manitoba and providing healthy and sustainable choices for Manitoba consumers;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

Farmers' Markets Week

In each year, the last full week of July is to be known throughout Manitoba as Farmers' Markets Week.

This Act may be referred to as chapter F48 of the Continuing Consolidation of the Statutes of Manitoba.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill proclaims the last full week of July of each year as Farmers' Markets Week.
