THE CRIMINAL PROPERTY FORFEITURE AMENDMENT ACT (2)

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Criminal Property Forfeiture Act is amended by this Act.

Clause 19(4)(c) is replaced with the following:

(c) to promote safer communities through payments, at the direction of the director, to programs operated by non-profit community organizations that promote addictions treatment, affordable, social and supportive housing, community patrol, harm reduction, mental health, restorative justice or community safety;

Subclause 19.10(1)(c)(iii) is replaced with the following:

(iii) the total amount paid to programs that promote safer communities, as permitted under clause 19(4)(c),

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Criminal Property Forfeiture Act. Currently, money in the criminal property forfeiture fund may be used for programs operated by law enforcement agencies. The Bill enables the money to instead go to non-profit community organizations for social programs, such as affordable housing and restorative justice.
