THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AMENDMENT ACT (TEACHING EXPERIENCE OF PRINCIPALS)

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Public Schools Act is amended by this Act.

The following is added before section 55.1 and after the centred heading "PRINCIPALS":

Minimum teaching experience for principals

55.0.1(1)

A school board may employ a person as a principal only if the person has at least two years of teaching experience while holding a valid teacher's certificate issued by the minister under The Education Administration Act or an equivalent certificate issued by another jurisdiction.

Exception

55.0.1(2)

Subsection (1) does not apply in the case of the principal of a school with fewer than three teachers.

Transitional

55.0.1(3)

This section does not apply to a person employed as a principal on the day before this section comes into force.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Public Schools Act. A principal must have at least two years of teaching experience. This requirement does not apply to an existing principal or a principal of a school with fewer than three teachers.
