THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSE AND STRETCHER TRANSPORTATION AMENDMENT ACT

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Emergency Medical Response and Stretcher Transportation Act is amended by this Act.

The following is added after subsection 20(1):

Benefits for non-medical escorts

20(1.1)

The Northern Patient Transportation Program must include provisions providing for financial assistance to be given to one of the following persons who, in the authorized circumstances, meets the eligibility criteria for escorting the person being transported, as those circumstances and criteria are prescribed in the regulations under this Act:

(a) a parent, guardian or relative of the person being transported;

(b) any other person who provides support and assistance to the person being transported.

Minister to report on support given for escorts

20(1.2)

The minister must include in the annual report of their department made under section 67 of The Financial Administration Act a statement of the amount of financial assistance given under the program to non-medical escorts during the fiscal year covered by the report. The initial statement must also set out the amount of the support given in each of the immediately preceding five fiscal years.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Emergency Medical Response and Stretcher Transportation Act to require that financial assistance for non-medical escorts be available under the Northern Patient Transportation Program.

The minister is required to report on the amount of the assistance provided in each fiscal year, and the initial report is to set out the assistance provided in the previous five fiscal years.
