THE LEGAL PROFESSION AMENDMENT ACT (QUEEN'S COUNSEL APPOINTMENTS)

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:
The Legal Profession Act is amended by this Act.
The following is added after the heading for Part 7 and before section 84:
The Lieutenant Governor in Council may, by letters patent under the great seal, appoint such members as he or she considers proper to be, during pleasure, provincial officers under the name "Her Majesty's counsel learned in the law for the Province of Manitoba".
A person is not eligible for appointment unless he or she has been a practising lawyer in Manitoba for at least 10 years.
Restriction on number of appointments
No more than 10 appointments may be made in a year.
Clause 84(1)(f) is amended by striking out everything after "to the office".
This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.
Explanatory Note This Bill amends The Legal Profession Act to enable qualified lawyers to be appointed as Queen's Counsel. |
