Bill 22

THE ELECTIONS AMENDMENT ACT (SIGNATURES REQUIRED FOR NOMINATION DOCUMENT)

  Bilingual version (PDF) Explanatory Note

(Assented to                                         )

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

C.C.S.M. c. E30 amended

1

The Elections Act is amended by this Act.

2

Item 6 of section 55 is amended by striking out "100 eligible voters" and substituting "50 eligible voters".

Coming into force and application

3

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent and applies to any election held after that day, despite section 202 of The Elections Act (amendments do not apply for 90 days).

Explanatory Note

Under the current Elections Act, nomination documents filed by a candidate must include the names, addresses and signatures of at least 100 eligible voters who support the nomination.

Manitoba's Chief Electoral Officer has recommended a reduction in the number of voters required to sign a candidate's nomination document. This Bill reduces that number to 50 for any election held after the Bill receives royal assent.
