Coming into force

3

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

Part VI of The Family Maintenance Act provides a number of means to enforce the payment of family maintenance obligations, including court-ordered maintenance. When the court orders payment of maintenance, it may also order the payment of legal costs. This Bill provides that the enforcement means in Part VI apply to the payment of court-ordered costs that remain unpaid six months after the order is made. A related amendment to The Garnishment Act allows for garnishment of those costs as if they were part of the maintenance order.
