THE ELECTION ADVERTISING INTEGRITY ACT (ELECTIONS FINANCES ACT AMENDED)

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

The Elections Finances Act is amended by this Act.

The following is added after section 48:

PARTY LEADER'S APPROVAL

OF ELECTRONIC ADVERTISING

Party leader's approval

48.1

No registered political party, and no person acting on behalf of and with the knowledge and consent of a registered political party, shall during an election period cause to appear on radio or television or any other electronic medium any advertisement or other campaign material referred to in subsection 48(3), unless

(a) if the advertisement or other campaign material is in audio form, the party leader personally announces his or her approval of the contents of the advertisement or other campaign material; and

(b) if the advertisement or other campaign material is in visual form, a personal statement from the party leader approving the contents of the advertisement or other campaign material is shown with the material.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill requires all electronic advertisements and other campaign materials used by a registered political party during an election period to include a personal statement by the leader of the party that he or she approves the contents of the advertisement or other campaign material.
