THE CENTENNIAL OF MANITOBA WOMEN'S RIGHT TO VOTE ACT

WHEREAS on January 28, 1916, Manitoba women were granted the right to vote in provincial elections;

AND WHEREAS Manitoba was the first Canadian province to give women the right to vote;

AND WHEREAS Nellie McClung was instrumental in helping women get the right to vote in Manitoba and has been honoured with a monument on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature;

AND WHEREAS January 28, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the day when Manitoba women were granted the right to vote in provincial elections and it is a day to honour and celebrate the passion, inspiration, and fierce determination of Nellie McClung and the other women who were champions of equality;

AND WHEREAS this special day is a reminder to Manitobans to value and appreciate this significant and hard-won right;

THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

Centennial of Manitoba Women's Right to Vote

January 28, 2016, is to be known as the Centennial of Manitoba Women's Right to Vote.

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

This Bill proclaims January 28, 2016, as the Centennial of Manitoba Women's Right to Vote.
