THE BOXING AMENDMENT ACT

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows:

C.C.S.M. c. B80 amended

The Boxing Act is amended by this Act.

The title is replaced with "THE COMBATIVE SPORTS ACT".

Section 1 is amended in the definition "commission" by striking out "Combative Sports Commission" and substituting "Manitoba Combative Sports Commission".

Section 2 is amended by striking out "the name "Combative Sports Commission"" and substituting "the name "Manitoba Combative Sports Commission"".

Section 3 is amended by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

Subsection 9(1) is amended by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

7(1)

Subsection 14(1) is amended

(a) by replacing the section heading with "Combative sports licences";

(b) in the French version, by striking out "combat" wherever it occurs and substituting "match"; and

(c) by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

7(2)

The following is added after subsection 14(1):

No licence to be issued to a minor

14(1.1)

The commission must not issue a licence to a person who is less than 18 years of age.

Subsection 15(1) is amended

(a) in the French version, by striking out "combat" wherever it occurs and substituting "match"; and

(b) by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

Subsection 15(3) of the French version is amended by striking out "combat" and substituting "match".

Clauses 18(1)(b) and (c) are amended by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

Section 19 is amended by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

Section 22 is amended

(a) in the French version of subsection (1), by striking out "combats" and substituting "matchs"; and

(b) in subsections (2) to (4),

(i) in the French version, by striking out "combat" wherever it occurs and substituting "match", and

(ii) by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

Subsection 25(1) is amended

(a) in the French version of the section heading and clauses (a) and (b), by striking out "combat" and substituting "match"; and

(b) in clauses (a) and (b), by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

(a) in the French version, by striking out "combat" wherever it occurs and substituting "match"; and

(a) in the French version, by striking out "combats" wherever it occurs and substituting "matchs";

(b) by striking out "boxing" wherever it occurs and substituting "combative sports"; and

(c) in clauses (k) and (l), by striking out "boxers" and substituting "contestants".

14(2)

Subsection 31(1.1) is amended

(a) in the section heading, by striking out ""boxing"" and substituting ""combative sports""; and

(b) by striking out ""boxing" as including kick-boxing" and substituting ""combative sports" as including boxing, kickboxing".

Subsection 31(2) is amended by striking out "boxing" and substituting "combative sports".

This Act may be referred to as chapter C150.3 of the Continuing Consolidation of the Statutes of Manitoba.

Consequential amendment, C.C.S.M. c. A70

Section 1 of The Amusements Act is amended in clause (e) of the definition "place of amusement" by striking out "a boxing or wrestling contest" and substituting "a combative sports contest, including a boxing or wrestling contest".

Coming into force

This Act comes into force on the day it receives royal assent.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends The Boxing Act as follows:

  • the Act is renamed The Combative Sports Act to reflect changes in the federal Criminal Code;
  • the name of the commission responsible for regulating the sport is changed to the Manitoba Combative Sports Commission;
  • references to "boxing" and "boxers" are changed to "combative sports" and "combative sports contestants" as a result of the federal changes;
  • a licence may not be issued to a minor.

A consequential amendment is made to The Amusements Act.
